Robert Downey Jr. Returns to Marvel to Reinvent Superhero Film Genre
The former Iron Man has set an ambitious goal for himself.
The official Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday podcast featured a video clip in which Robert Downey Jr. explained why he decided to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to the actor, he was drawn in by the opportunity to reinvent the superhero movie genre:
“What brought me back was the opportunity to rethink the superhero movie genre — no easy task. You know Mr. Feige, you know our team: we love a challenge. And we thought, ‘Let’s try something different and see if we can get excited about it ourselves. Because if we are excited, the audience will follow.’”
Downey played Tony Stark for more than ten years, and that story concluded in Avengers: Endgame. Now the actor will return in a different role as Victor von Doom, the main antagonist of the heroes in Avengers: Doomsday.
The film is scheduled to premiere on December 18, 2026.
