New Lord of the Rings Film Delayed Due to Warner Bros. and Paramount Merger, Reports Say
Following leadership changes, Warner Bros. appears to be taking a more cautious approach to the continued development of The Lord of the Rings franchise.
According to Knight Edge Media journalist Caleb Williams, production on the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum — wait, The Lord of the Rings: The Shadow of the Past, written by Stephen Colbert, has been postponed indefinitely. Based on his information, the studio’s new leadership wants to evaluate the performance of The Hunt for Gollum before giving the green light to other films based on Tolkien’s works.
The situation raises additional questions due to Colbert’s conflict with CBS leadership. The host publicly criticized the company and its actions amid the Skydance deal, after which his talk show was canceled. Now, CBS and Warner Bros. are controlled by the same media group, although there is no confirmation of a connection between this conflict and the delay of The Shadow of the Past. Furthermore, following publication, Warner Bros. contacted Williams to clarify that the film is not canceled and remains in development.

Meanwhile, The Hunt for Gollum is in the final stages of filming. The premiere of Andy Serkis’s film is scheduled for December 17, 2027.
