The anticipation for The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 is reaching a fever pitch. While fans are already aware of high-profile guest stars like Kevin Michael Richardson and Wayne Brady joining the fray, the production team has managed to keep a few tricks up their sleeve. On Wednesday, the Critical Role team pulled back the curtain on a major new casting announcement.
In a recent Instagram update, Matt Mercer, Sam Riegel, and the rest of the ensemble revealed that cinematic icon and Lord of the Rings legend Andy Serkis will lend his voice to a character in the upcoming season. The creators remained tight-lipped regarding exactly who Serkis will be portraying, leaving the fanbase to speculate during the final countdown to next week’s premiere.
Andy Serkis is a titan of motion-capture and character performance, most famously recognized for his transformative work as Gollum in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. He is set to revisit that iconic role in 2027’s The Hunt for Gollum, which he is also directing. Beyond Middle-earth, his storied career includes pivotal performances in The Batman, Black Panther, and the Planet of the Apes franchise, as well as his recent triple-threat achievement as the star, producer, and director of Animal Farm.
Reflecting on the casting, Travis Willingham shared with Screen Rant that Serkis was a dream collaborator they had targeted since the show’s inception. “His range is truly unparalleled, and he possesses a unique ability to make other performances seem almost effortless,” Willingham noted. “Watching him fully inhabit a character is a masterclass; it was a genuine honor to have him on board.”
Set a year after the events of season 3, the upcoming installment finds the members of Vox Machina scattered following their hard-won victory against the Chroma Conclave. However, their respite is short-lived. As the group faces fresh threats and mounting dangers, viewers should be prepared for high stakes—according to Riegel, there is no guarantee that our heroes will emerge unscathed this time around.
The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 makes its debut on June 3 on Amazon Prime.
