Bungie’s Marathon made its debut last week, and while it hasn’t quite reached the astronomical heights some anticipated, it is maintaining a steady daily average of roughly 60,000 concurrent players on Steam—a figure that doesn’t even account for the console community.
A primary deterrent for those who sampled the game during the pre-launch “Server Slam” may have been its punishing difficulty. The community has been vocal on social media regarding the lethality of UESC bots, citing their overwhelming damage and “bullet sponge” nature as a major point of frustration, particularly for those braving the world solo.
Bungie has taken this feedback to heart. The latest Marathon hotfix, update 1.0.0.4, scales back the health of most UESC hostiles and reduces the shield capacity of bosses. While a few specific enemies remain unchanged—such as the Commander featured in the “Introducing: Traxus” contract—the overall PvE experience should feel less draining. In a developer note, the team explained:
“With this adjustment, we aim to reduce the heavy resource drain on both solo players and teams when engaging UESC forces. The intent is to make your ammunition and medical supplies last longer without stripping the UESC of their lethality. We’ve heard clearly that players value the tension these combatants provide, and we intend to preserve that ‘bite.'”
Beyond enemy balancing, the update introduces significant tweaks to Rook. Most notably, the WSTR shotgun found there now carries a “compromised” status, meaning players must locate a Matter Fixative to successfully extract with the weapon. To offset this, exfiltrating with Rook now grants increased CyberAcme reputation, with bonuses scaled to ensure solo players receive a more equitable reward.
Logistical support has also been bolstered; sponsored kits from MIDA, CyberAcme, and Arachne now arrive with additional starting ammo, while the Perimeter map sees an uptick in the spawn rate of munitions crates and medical stations. Furthermore, questing has been streamlined, as objective markers on the HUD will now trigger at 20 meters, doubling the previous 10-meter detection range.
Players should also note a temporary navigational change at the Outpost, which currently prevents access to the Pinwheel via the Broken Wing. For a comprehensive breakdown of every adjustment, visit the official Bungie patch notes.
