Warner Bros. Discovery has officially confirmed that a follow-up to Hogwarts Legacy is currently in active development. Revealed within the publisher’s recent financial earnings disclosure, the project is formally acknowledged as the “second installment” of the burgeoning franchise, with Avalanche Software widely anticipated to lead development once again.

The decision to greenlight a sequel comes as no surprise given the debut title’s staggering commercial dominance. Arriving in early 2023, Hogwarts Legacy went on to surpass 22 million units sold, ultimately claiming the top spot as the year’s best-selling video game—a rare feat that eclipsed perennial chart-toppers such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. Set during the late 1800s, well before the events of the core literary series, the original action RPG allowed players to step into the shoes of a bespoke student wielding a mysterious ancient magic while navigating the perils of an escalating wizarding conspiracy.

Chart Success Amidst Ongoing Friction

Beyond its financial performance and dominance atop global search trends, the game arrived amid considerable discourse surrounding Wizarding World creator J.K. Rowling. The author has garnered sustained criticism from civil rights organizations, including GLAAD, for her vocal and well-funded campaigns challenging transgender rights and legal protections across the United Kingdom.

Although Warner Bros. previously underscored that Rowling held no direct involvement in the storytelling or mechanical design of the original release, the intellectual property naturally yields licensing revenue for the author.
