A Nintendo indie game outsold Marvel’s Wolverine, while PlayStation clearly expected more
Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine has fallen short of Sony’s expectations. Despite its high-profile name and big budget, the game trailed a niche rhythm game for Nintendo consoles.
Marvel’s Wolverine sold a modest 2.4 million copies in its first few weeks, while niche title Rhythm Heaven Groove attracted nearly 2.9 million buyers over the same period.
Selling 2.4 million copies in the first few weeks would usually be considered a good result. But for a big-budget superhero blockbuster, those numbers look weak. Analysts had expected much greater success, but Sony’s latest financial report has prompted them to reassess their expectations.
The gap is especially striking compared with Insomniac Games’ previous work. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, for example, sold 2.5 million copies in its first 24 hours. Wolverine took several dozen days to approach that figure. Spider-Man is better known around the world, but the large difference in sales pace is still surprising.
The comparison looks even more striking alongside games of a completely different scale. Despite its niche genre and simple presentation, Nintendo title Rhythm Heaven Groove attracted nearly 2.9 million buyers over the same period. The rhythm game therefore outsold the expensive Marvel superhero game.

Comparing a blockbuster about one of the X-Men with simple musical entertainment shows that a big name and a huge budget alone do not guarantee success.
