Journalists Say RTX 30 GPUs Can Do More Than NVIDIA Claimed

NVIDIA has spent years claiming that Frame Generation is technically impossible on GeForce RTX 30-series graphics cards. Hardware Unboxed tested a third-party mod and found otherwise.

Mods have emerged in recent weeks whose creators say they can run the original version of Frame Generation on RTX 20- and RTX 30-series cards. Hardware Unboxed tested those claims and found that the technology does work. The mods could give owners of older RTX cards the same high-quality frame generation available to users of RTX 40- and RTX 50-series cards.

This isn’t some different kind of Frame Generation that merely imitates the real thing. This appears to be the genuine technology. (…) This is great news for owners of older graphics cards who previously couldn’t access this feature.

Crucially, frame pacing is just as smooth as with the standard implementation of Frame Generation on RTX 40- and RTX 50-series cards. The load on the GPU is also nearly identical.

In short, NVIDIA lied to us about Frame Generation support on the RTX 30 generation. That’s my conclusion after testing. These tests show that NVIDIA turned its back on RTX 30 owners, artificially restricting access to the feature without any technical basis.
