Amount Amazon Paid for Rights to Underperforming Throne and Liberty Revealed
Amazon Games is scaling back its online RPG catalog, and new details have surfaced regarding its original deal with NCSoft following the decision to return the global publishing rights for Throne and Liberty.
According to Korean industry publication Inven Global, Amazon paid roughly $70 million for the worldwide publishing rights to the game. The contract was originally set to run until September 30, 2028, with an option to extend through 2029. NCSoft reportedly received the entire payment in advance, and the updated agreement does not require any partial refund.
Throne and Liberty launched in the West on October 1, 2024, and debuted on Steam with a peak of 336,300 concurrent players. However, the game lost 95% of its active audience in less than a year.
Observers point to a heavy emphasis on guilds and open-world PvP, excessive grinding, and controversial monetization tied to the auction house currency as key reasons for the decline. Amazon is also shutting down New World and stepping away from Lost Ark as the company shifts its focus toward Luna and AI-driven games.
