Larian Studios, the acclaimed developer behind Baldur’s Gate 3 and the recently unveiled Divinity project, has found an unexpected ally amidst a wave of criticism. Following CEO Swen Vincke’s candid remarks regarding the studio’s use of generative AI, the director of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has stepped forward in their defense.
For those who missed the unfolding drama, it has been a tumultuous week for Larian. Following the excitement of The Game Awards 2025, a controversy erupted over Vincke’s admission that the studio utilizes AI technology during the earliest stages of project conceptualization. He clarified, however, that the tech is never used for final production assets or any artwork that appears in the finished game. Publishing director Michael ‘Cromwelp’ Douse reinforced this stance, stating emphatically that Larian does not employ AI for art production.
Despite these clarifications, the studio remains a target of social media scrutiny. In response, fans and industry peers are beginning to push back against the outrage. Daniel Vávra, the lead behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, voiced his support on social media. Responding to Vincke’s explanation, Vávra remarked, “This AI hysteria is the same as when people were smashing steam engines in the 19th century.”
