Jason Statham’s Perspective on His Action Movie Career

Mutiny star Jason Statham built an extensive action filmography despite entering the movie business in his thirties. During his younger years, Statham competed in diving and swimming. That athletic background led to work with a sports-modeling agency, which he balanced with selling jewelry on the street like his father. Filmmaker Guy Ritchie spotted Statham during a modeling job and cast him in the 1998 crime comedy Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, launching his career in film.

Statham has appeared in nearly sixty movies since his debut. Audiences often note that he plays very similar characters from one project to the next. Years ago, Statham addressed this reputation directly and explained why he embraces those roles.

Statham on His Action Persona

During a 2017 appearance on The Jim and Sam Show hosted by Jim Norton and Sam Roberts, the hosts asked Statham whether filmmakers ever offer him parts outside his usual fast-paced action territory. Statham joked about playing a mathematician dealing with a difficult divorce, noting that he neither receives those scripts nor seeks them out.

Statham explained that he views himself less as a traditional dramatic actor and more as an athlete who landed in Hollywood by chance. While he has occasionally varied his work with the crime drama Hummingbird and Paul Feig’s action comedy Spy, he prefers roles that match his physical abilities.

“A mathematician that’s going through a bitter divorce or something? No, I don’t get offered those [roles].”

“I only want to do things that I think I could do a good job at, and I think I’d be no good at that. You know, I’m not an actor really. I mean, I used to work jewelry and pinch jewelry on the street. I was a sportsman for years. I’m not really some thespian that can adopt and chameleon himself into different roles. I just got into this by being in the right place at the right time… I got plucked from obscurity into the movie industry.”

“It’s not like I’ve spent years honing out the different accents or working on my craft. That doesn’t apply to me. I accept what I’m good at. I might not be good at any of it, but I accept what I feel that I’m confident at and just try and go with the flow in that direction.”

“A lot of the characters I play are pretty similar in some ways. I get a lot of the physical roles because I can do all that. So there’s an authenticity with that, so I tend to stick with that.”

Upcoming Projects

That focus continues to serve Statham well. He is set to reprise the role of Adam Clay in The Beekeeper 2 and return as Deckard Shaw in Fast Forever. He will also take on a self-referential role as a version of himself in Jason Statham Stole My Bike, directed by David Leitch of Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train fame.

Statham retains a dedicated theatrical following even when distribution runs into trouble. In August, Amazon Prime accidentally leaked Mutiny, cutting into its box office returns. At 59 years old, Statham continues to deliver the steady stream of tough, combat-ready leads that his audience expects, including his work in Shelter.
