Jason Momoas Early Sci-Fi Series Now Streaming Free on YouTube

In 1994, director Roland Emmerich released Stargate as a sci-fi adventure meant to begin a trilogy. Although those plans stalled, Roland Emmerich followed the film with Independence Day. The universe expanded further when Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner created Stargate SG-1, which ran for 10 successful seasons on the Sci-Fi Channel, now known as SyFy.

SG-1 follows an interstellar crew using futuristic portals called Stargates to travel across the galaxy. Their mission focuses on searching for alien technology and defending Earth from potential attacks. The series relied mostly on an adventure-of-the-week format with occasional major reveals. A significant twist arrived at the end of season 7 when the crew discovered the lost city of Atlantis, a legendary realm built by an advanced alien race called the Ancients.

What is Stargate Atlantis about?

Atlantis inherited high expectations from SG-1, which was deeply popular by the end of its seventh season. Despite this, the sequel achieved success on its own terms. The storyline incorporates pre-existing Stargate lore while maintaining a self-contained drama with distinct flair and complexity.

Unlike the SG-1 crew, who maintained easy access to Earth and Stargate Command, the Atlantis crew is stranded millions of light-years away in the Pegasus Galaxy. Being cut off from Earth and its resources raises the stakes during every mission.

Stargate Atlantis is a morally complex survival story with compelling characters

While SG-1 and Atlantis share structural similarities, their tones differ. The parent series combines survival scenarios with interplanetary exploration through a planet-of-the-week framework. Atlantis emphasizes survival, focusing its plots on unchecked hubris and the costs of morally dubious scientific advancements.

One example is a retrovirus designed to turn a Wraith into a human. The practical results are mixed, but the ethical implications are severe. Erasing an enemy’s cultural memories on a genetic level creates a moral dilemma for the crew despite their good intentions.

Stargate Atlantis maintains this complexity across five seasons. The narrative shows how advanced alien civilizations fell despite their strength, warning that humans face similar risks if they underestimate their enemies. Atlantis follows the tradition of SG-1 by anchoring exciting adventures in interpersonal dynamics, allowing characters like Sheppard and McKay to evolve.

When competent people work together, conflict arises. Atlantis resolves these tensions through the unique actions of its titular crew. Alongside tension and anxiety, the episodes leave ample room for humor and heart.
