The gaming community has been abuzz with speculation following reports of high-level personnel changes at Archetype Entertainment.
Fans grew concerned after news broke regarding the departure of studio head James Ohlen. Apprehension over development stability and the final quality of Exodus—a project frequently hailed as the spiritual successor to Mass Effect—prompted the industry veteran to release a clarifying statement. Ohlen emphasized that the game is currently “in a very strong position” and remains “in the hands of proven professionals,” including several former Mass Effect developers from BioWare.
According to Ohlen, the decision to step down was reached last summer, fueled by a desire to avoid professional burnout. After spending over six years spearheading a major AAA project while juggling both creative and administrative duties, he felt the time was right to pass the torch. He also clarified that his exit was a mutual agreement with Hasbro, noting that he maintains an excellent rapport with the team and will continue to provide consultancy for the brand’s intellectual properties.
“I am remaining with Wizards of the Coast in a creative advisory capacity, but my focus will shift more toward the tabletop RPG realm. I am currently prioritizing the work that brings me the most joy: narrative craftsmanship and world-building.”
Despite the leadership transition, the setting and storyline of Exodus remain under the guidance of Drew Karpyshyn, the acclaimed lead writer of Mass Effect and Star Wars: KOTOR. The game, which stars Matthew McConaughey, is currently slated for a launch in early 2027.
