Iceland: Ferries and Transparent Water
Occasionally, the ultimate driving expedition begins right where the asphalt ends. Today, we chart a course for the dramatic landscapes of Iceland as we delve into the maritime routes featured in the upcoming Iceland DLC for Euro Truck Simulator 2, launching on November 10th. Prepare to embark as we examine what awaits on the open water.

Unlike standard destinations within Euro Truck Simulator 2, arriving in Iceland requires more than simply following the highway. With the expansive North Atlantic Ocean dividing the island from mainland Europe, professional drivers must take to the high seas. To facilitate this journey, our environment artists and map designers have integrated several authentic ferry routes originating from established European harbors, supplemented by a domestic crossing designed to streamline your exploration upon arrival.

The primary main-line connection transports motorists from Hirtshals, Denmark, directly to Seyðisfjörður—a breathtaking coastal village cradled by majestic mountains and deep eastern fjords. This itinerary faithfully mirrors real-world commercial voyages expertly managed by the Smyril Line.

An alternative transatlantic corridor departs from Rotterdam’s bustling Europoort in the Netherlands, terminating at Þorlákshöfn along Iceland’s rugged southwestern shores. While historically operated as a dedicated freight service by Smyril Line Cargo, we have reimagined this maritime path into a fully functional passenger and cargo ferry, allowing virtual truckers to transport their heavy rigs seamlessly.

Furthermore, we are introducing a brand-new maritime link connecting Ålesund, Norway, with Seyðisfjörður. Although this specific route lacks a direct real-world counterpart, we integrated it to enrich your navigational choices and bridge our newest geographical expansions. This addition carries a subtle historical nod, honoring the deep-rooted Norse maritime heritage established during the ninth century when early pioneers first sailed from Scandinavian shores toward the volcanic island. Consequently, the previously dormant ferry terminal in Ålesund will finally open its gates to players!

However, maritime transit isn’t strictly reserved for reaching the island. Truckers can also navigate across the scenic expanse of the Breiðafjörður bay between Stykkishólmur and Brjánslækur. This authentic local crossing meanders through a pristine region renowned for its countless islets and thriving avian populations. Moreover, it provides a brilliant logistical shortcut, allowing you to bypass the demanding, winding switchbacks of Route 60 situated in the island’s northwestern territory.

Speaking of aquatic environments, we are progressively implementing crystal-clear, transparent water rendering within Euro Truck Simulator 2, making its debut appearance exclusively in the Iceland expansion. This technical enhancement enables drivers to peer through the water’s surface to observe submerged rock formations and riverbeds, particularly in shallow coastal zones. Additionally, we’ve incorporated dynamic foam physics along rapid inland waterways and coastal shores. These atmospheric upgrades will grace numerous locations across Iceland, breathing unprecedented realism into the surrounding scenery.

Nevertheless, there is an important detail to consider before casting off! Transporting heavy-duty tractor units and articulated trailers via international ferries comes with a substantial financial investment, so be sure to budget your logistics and capital accordingly. Alternatively, should you wish to bypass the nautical voyage entirely, the Quick Travel mechanic remains readily available to instantly relocate your fleet to your newly established Icelandic garage.

We trust you have thoroughly enjoyed this comprehensive preview of the maritime routes heading to our Iceland DLC, arriving on November 10th! Be sure to add the expansion to your Steam Wishlist to receive immediate launch notifications. We are eagerly anticipating your arrival in the Land of Fire and Ice. Until then, keep those wheels turning!
