How to Get Rid of Mud in Gothic 1 Remake
In Gothic 1 Remake, you will likely encounter Mud, a character who interprets your mere presence as a binding contract for lifelong companionship. If his relentless stalking, unsolicited life stories, and barrage of personal questions aren’t your idea of a good time, you’re certainly not alone. Fortunately, you don’t have to tolerate his clingy behavior indefinitely.
Here is how to get rid of Mud once and for all.
Navigating the “Mud” Situation
Mud haunts the Old Camp, typically idling near his hut by Snaf the cook. If you make the mistake of drawing near him, he’ll initiate a conversation and essentially invite himself along on your journey. Even a blunt “Piss off” serves as little more than an inconvenience to him; he will continue to shadow you, frequently pulling you into dialogue windows to share his trivial thoughts.
You might wonder if Mud serves a deeper purpose. In short: he doesn’t. He is primarily a nuisance designed to test your patience. While he offers access to his hut, it is redundant given the superior lodging you can secure near the fighting arena. Furthermore, while you can technically loot his personal chest, the meager rewards—a few ore nuggets and some bread—hardly justify the headache of his constant company.
Effective Strategies for Parting Ways
If you have finally reached your limit, here are the most effective ways to evict Mud from your adventure:
- Teach him a lesson: A solid beating is often enough to break the “friendship.”
- Permanent removal: Ending his life ensures he stays gone for good, plus you can loot his inventory.
- Let nature take its course: Lure him into the wilderness and let the local predators finish him off.
- Patience: As you traverse the dangerous Valley of Mines, he will eventually fall in battle against stronger enemies.
If you prefer a non-lethal route, beating him until his health bar vanishes will force him to surrender. Once he is on the ground, you can spare him; this typically leaves him with enough resentment that he will permanently stop following you. You can do this safely outside the Old Camp gates to avoid unwanted attention from the guards.
If you aren’t feeling merciful, murdering Mud is the most straightforward solution. If you find him too difficult to take down alone, simply bait him into a nest of scavengers or blood flies. Their aggressive behavior makes for a quick and “clean” departure. Once he is deceased, he will not respawn, leaving you with his club and a modest handful of ore.
A word of warning: If you are hunting for the “Mud Freak” achievement, do not kill him too early. You must endure his dialogue for an extended period and eventually beat him (without killing him) to trigger the final voice line necessary for the trophy.
