If the price ends up being too steep, bringing the new device to market could be difficult.
Valve recently unveiled the Steam Machine, but the company did not reveal its price at the time. Representatives have since indicated a provisional price range they’re considering.
Programmer Pierre-Loup Griffis and one of the Steam Deck designers, Lawrence Yang, took part in a podcast hosted by the YouTuber Skill Up, and during the conversation they were asked about the device’s price:
I think that assembling a PC from components that deliver performance comparable to the Steam Machine would place it in the price bracket we’re aiming for. Ideally, we want to stay competitive and offer strong value for money. At this stage it’s hard to give a precise figure, since many external factors will affect the final price.
An earlier estimate put the cost of components to build a Steam Machine at $425, suggesting a final retail price in the $450–$500 range.
Tech YouTuber Linus Tech Tips believes the price is more likely to fall between $600 and $700.
There are also opinions that the device’s price could climb as high as $800.
