Valve ranks among the most efficient companies in history. With just 336 employees and over $17 billion in revenue in the past year, the Gabe Newell–led firm has produced striking results.
Menlo Ventures’ Deedy Das calculates that this amounts to more than $50 million in revenue per employee, while the company’s average salary is approximately $1.3 million.
Valve’s principal driver of success is the Steam platform, which dominates the PC market and supplies the majority of its income. The company’s compact structure and private ownership (no publicly traded shares) allow it to pursue long-term strategies without shareholder pressure.
That freedom has also encouraged hardware ventures. The Steam Deck remains popular, and recent reveals — including a new Steam Machine, an updated Steam Controller, and the Steam Frame VR headset — have attracted interest. Together, these devices reinforce the Steam ecosystem.
In the tech sector, Valve is a rare example of a small team delivering massive revenue and significant market influence.
