Horizon film to begin production in 2026; premiere scheduled for 2027

Asad Kizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, revealed in official documents Sony filed in its lawsuit against Tencent that the film’s screenplay is already complete and the team is currently searching for a director. Filming is planned to start in 2026, with a theatrical release expected in 2027.

“We are developing a Horizon feature film in partnership with Columbia Pictures. We already have a working script and are actively looking for a director. The aim is to begin principal photography in 2026 and release the film in 2027,” Kizilbash said. He added that the project continues the studios’ collaboration that previously produced Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023).

Kizilbash emphasized that the franchise’s protagonist, Aloy, will remain the central figure of the upcoming film and an important part of the PlayStation brand.

In April, Kizilbash had indicated the Horizon adaptation would take the form of a series because the team wanted “to execute the idea properly.” Now Sony appears to have reverted to pursuing a theatrical film.
