Hitman Creators Say They’ve Found the Formula for Single-Player Games-as-a-Service — Studio Head
IO Interactive head Hakan Abrak said the studio “has found a successful formula for a single-player live service.” He noted that the success of Hitman World of Assassination fully financed 007 First Light.
I genuinely believe we’ve discovered the right formula for a single-player live service.
In the games industry projects are often canceled, and online titles can be complex and costly — high-stakes bets sometimes collapse. World of Assassination shows that you can build games without overcomplicating them or resorting to needless excess.
Hitman World of Assassination comprises the Hitman trilogy — Hitman, Hitman 2, and Hitman 3. On January 26, 2023, the three games were unified into a single project that continues to receive support. On December 1, 2025, a mission to eliminate the elusive target “Eminem vs. Slim Shady,” announced during the Xbox Partner Preview, will begin.
Abrak added that development of 007 First Light was financed “solely by Hitman.” He confirmed work is underway on a “multiplayer fantasy project,” but said Hitman and 007 First Light remain entirely independent.
