HBO Renews “The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” for a Second Season

The company confirmed the series’ renewal two months before the first season’s debut.

With almost two months to go before the premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ first season, HBO has already greenlit a second season. The follow-up is slated for release in 2027, which should produce a comparatively brief hiatus between installments — an uncommon pace for shows set in the Game of Thrones universe.

That accelerated schedule is likely enabled by the series’ format: each season will consist of six half-hour episodes, rather than the eight-to-ten hour-long episodes typical of other franchise entries.

The renewal was confirmed by Casey Bloys, HBO’s chief content officer, during a presentation in New York. Along with House of the Dragon — which was also renewed early for a fourth season — the show is part of the network’s long-term plan to expand George R. R. Martin’s world on screen.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts the Dunk and Egg novellas, following the travels of the hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and his squire Egg — the future King Aegon V Targaryen. The story is set roughly ninety years before the original Game of Thrones and about fifty years after dragons vanished from the world. Unlike House of the Dragon, this new series promises a more intimate scale and a gentler tone — often described as a knightly fable about friendship and bravery.

The leads are played by Peter Claffey (Ser Duncan the Tall) and Dexter Sol Ansell (Egg). The cast also includes Daniel Ings, Bertie Carvel and Tanzyn Crawford. Ira Parker serves as showrunner, with George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis credited among the producers.

The first season will premiere on January 18, 2026 on HBO and the Max streaming service.
