HBO Renews ‘House of the Dragon’ for Fourth Season Early

Fans of the Game of Thrones prequel can relax — the spinoff’s future is secure through 2028.

HBO announced an early renewal of House of the Dragon for a fourth season — before the third season’s premiere, which is expected in summer 2026. The renewal was disclosed by HBO and HBO Max CEO Casey Bloys during the company’s presentation in New York.

Showrunner Ryan Condal has previously suggested the story could conclude with a fourth season, but HBO has not confirmed whether it will be the final installment. According to Deadline, Condal is still working on the scripts, and a definitive decision on whether the series will end will come later.

House of the Dragon is adapted from George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and follows the internal strife within House Targaryen roughly two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones. Filming for the second season wrapped in August 2024, with that season focusing on the escalation of conflict and the move toward the large-scale civil war known as the “Dance of the Dragons.”

The third season’s cast includes Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Fia Saban and others. The series is produced by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal.

The fourth season of House of the Dragon is slated to arrive in 2028.
