HBO Casts Moaning Myrtle for Second Season of Harry Potter Series

While HBO’s new Harry Potter TV series has yet to premiere, filming for its second season has already started. More roles are being cast for season 2, which will introduce new characters from the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Recently, Tom Riddle and Ginny Weasley were cast, or in Ginny’s case, recast.

Three more actors joined the cast: Rafe Spall as Arthur Weasley, Jasper Ambrose as Colin Creevey, and Molly Hewitt-Richards as Moaning Myrtle. Arthur Weasley plays a supporting role as the father of Ginny, Ron, and the other Weasley kids. Spall appeared in Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Apple TV’s Trying. Mark Williams portrayed Arthur Weasley in the Harry Potter films.

Colin Creevey is a student at Hogwarts and a Harry Potter fanboy. Ambrose voiced a sheep in The Sheep Detectives. Hugh Mitchell played Creevey in the movies.

Molly Hewitt-Richards as Moaning Myrtle is the most notable of the new additions. Moaning Myrtle plays a key role in Harry Potter and Chamber of Secrets. The Serpent of Slytherin, a Basilisk, killed her in the 1940s, and she has since haunted the bathroom where she died. She helps Harry and Ron discover the titular Chamber. Hewitt-Richards appeared in the British dramas Code of Silence and Casualty, stepping into the role after Shirley Henderson played Moaning Myrtle in the film series.

HBO assembled an all-new cast, starting with young lead actors Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. They are supported by John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas, Tristan Harland as Fred Weasley, Gabriel Harland as George Weasley, Ruari Spooner as Percy Weasley, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, Finn Stephens as Vincent Crabbe, William Nash as Gregory Goyle, Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick, and Sirine Saba as Pomona Sprout.

The robust cast also includes Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Gracie Cochrane as Ginny Weasley, Richard Durden as Cuthbert Binns, Louise Brealey as Rolanda Hooch, Bríd Brennan as Poppy Pomfrey, Leigh Gill as Griphook, and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will premiere on HBO on Dec. 25.
