Gundam Rogue Orbit Could Be the Next Great Mech-Action Game

Bandai Namco is steering its iconic Gundam franchise into a bold, highly stylized direction with Gundam Rogue Orbit. Designed as an adrenaline-fueled, high-mobility action game, it serves as an ideal jumping-on point for newcomers, completely untethered from fifty years of intricate lore. Getting hands-on with a playable build at the Tokyo Game Show revealed a refreshing reality: this is not a punishing, unforgiving Soulslike. Instead, it offers an approachable yet deeply satisfying action experience that welcomes players of all skill levels.

Initial announcements drew natural comparisons to heavy-hitting action titles like Armored Core, Monster Hunter, and Devil Make Cry. While those influences are certainly present, Gundam Rogue Orbit lacks the steep difficulty curve of recent titles like Armored Core 6. Combat leans heavily into close-quarters melee brawling, featuring dazzling swordplay, precise lance thrusts, and versatile whip-sword maneuvers executed with the flamboyant flair characteristic of a character-action masterpiece.

Ultimately, Gundam Rogue Orbit feels vibrant, energetic, and wonderfully liberating. The combat mechanics are forgiving without feeling toothless, granting players immense freedom of movement and offensive expression. While thrusters and rapid-fire attacks will occasionally push your mobile suit toward a temporary overheat, the game rarely penalizes you for aggressive play.

What is Gundam Rogue Orbit about?

The narrative thrust puts players in the cockpit of the Gundam Helix, piloted by a protagonist known as RE-X. Aided by an articulate Haro companion named Vii, RE-X and the Helix wage war against swarms of menacing extraterrestrial invaders known simply as the Apocalypse. Fortunately, the Helix comes well-equipped for the task. The TGS demo showcased three distinct loadout configurations: the Assault Sword, featuring a targeted anchor skill that grapples the mobile suit directly to targets; the Whip Sword, which balances close-range slashes with an elongated reach; and the Sword Lance, designed for devastating mid-range thrusts that keep dangerous adversaries safely at bay.

Each configuration boasts its own suite of Tactical Skills and AP Units. Tactical Skills deliver cinematic, screen-clearing devastation through barrages of energy beams, massive explosions, and frenetic melee combos—complemented by high-speed Tactical Moves designed for swift evasive maneuvers and tactical flanking. Meanwhile, AP Units offer specialized utility, such as deployable energy shields, with pilots able to equip two active modifiers at any given moment.

True to the pedigree of elite character-action games, Gundam Rogue Orbit introduces a transcendent tier of combat power known as Over-Rise. Sustained combat charges a dedicated meter, allowing pilots to trigger Over-Rise to significantly amplify their baseline offense while automatically dodging incoming hazards for a limited time. Furthermore, this state can be violently expended through an AP Unit Burst to unleash a devastating ultimate attack. Picture a chaotic battlefield completely saturated by focused energy blasts converging on a single unfortunate target, and you will begin to appreciate the sheer destructive potential at your fingertips.

Although the preview build at TGS restricted players to pre-configured loadouts, the game promises a robust suite of visual and functional mobile suit customization. Die-hard mech enthusiasts should find an abundance of deep mechanics to tinker with upon launch.

Fortunately, players won’t have to endure a long wait to discover if Bandai Namco’s ambitious spin-off manages to redefine the mech genre. Gundam Rogue Orbit is officially scheduled to launch on March 5, 2027, releasing globally for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S.

Bandai Namco Studios’ new Gundam game is set in a fresh universe featuring an entirely original cast of characters.
