Ghost of Yotei Lost Significant Content — Developers Tried to Surprise with a Time-Travel System

Ghost of Yotei earned widespread praise and was among the most-nominated titles at The Game Awards 2025. However, it later emerged that the developers removed a substantial portion of the game’s content.

Jason Connell, the creative director of Ghost of Yotei, told Vince Gilligan that in the original vision the player could travel through time from almost any location. Players would simply hold the touchpad to slip into Atsu’s childhood and experience the world from a wholly different, warmer perspective. The team was excited by the concept: pairing a bleak present with the “warmth of the past” was meant to create a striking emotional counterpoint.

Ultimately, implementing that system would have required roughly twice as many assets and locations. Connell acknowledged that the team struggled with the decision to restrict time travel to preplanned points, but he believes it was the right call.

He added that if time travel were available everywhere, without additional narrative scaffolding it would quickly lose its appeal.
