Gamescom organizers do not view the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI presentation as a threat to their event, emphasizing that the convention will offer a broad lineup of new releases.

The trade show faces a major competitor for audience attention this year, with an extended showcase of Grand Theft Auto VI scheduled for August 27. The reveal will premiere on Netflix before the official recording arrives on Rockstar Games’ YouTube channel and the game’s website six hours later.

While Rockstar Games is set to draw massive viewership, Gamescom organizers believe their event will not be overshadowed. To them, the showcase is not a threat, but another large-scale industry event.

Speaking with GamesRadar+, Brand Director Stefan Heikhaus acknowledged that “games like GTA or other major releases of recent years […] are extremely important. For the gaming industry, they are guiding stars.”

Heikhaus expects players to return to Gamescom coverage once they finish watching the GTA VI reveal, explaining that the convention will feature many other titles, including world premieres:

At events like Gamescom, you get to experience not just one game, but thousands, or at least hundreds. And that is an important difference. Of course, GTA will take some attention away from the digital version [broadcast] of Gamescom. But I believe that very quickly people will return to Gamescom as soon as they watch the GTA content, because we have so much to offer: so many world premieres, so much that is new. Hundreds of studios and companies are represented.

Gamescom organizers also pointed out that players do not focus solely on one title, noting that “most of them are interested in many different games.”

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19 this year on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Games and Take-Two have not yet announced a release date or launch window for the PC version.
