Game of Thrones Recasts Ned Stark for Upcoming Project

For enthusiasts eager to experience the world of Westeros live on stage, The Royal Shakespeare Company has officially unveiled the cast for its highly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel, The Mad King. Stepping into the iconic boots of Ned Stark—a role immortalized by Sean Bean—is Michael Abubakar. Abubakar brings a formidable theatrical pedigree to the production, having previously headlined acclaimed performances such as Romeo & Juliet at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Roots at the Almeida Theatre.

The supporting ensemble for this ambitious stage production features Michael Shaffer as the volatile King Aerys II Targaryen, alongside Noah Ritter as Prince Rhaegar, Harmony Rose-Bremner as Lyanna Stark, Maxim Ays as Jaime Lannister, Callum Woodhouse as Robert Baratheon, and Elizabeth Ayodele as Elia Martell. The script comes from the pen of celebrated playwright Duncan Macmillan, known for Lungs and 1984, with directorial duties helmed by the acclaimed Dominic Cooke.

Game of Thrones: The Mad King is slated for a run at the Royal Shakespeare Theater in London from July 20 through September 5. While the opening week is already sold out, tickets remain available for subsequent dates. The narrative unfolds a decade prior to the events of the original Game of Thrones, focusing on the fateful Tourney at Harrenhal—a pivotal jousting event that served as the catalyst for Robert’s Rebellion. This tournament serves as the historic backdrop for Rhaegar Targaryen’s first meeting with Lyanna Stark, the spark for a tragic chain of events that would eventually plunge the Seven Kingdoms into war.

Though Martin noted earlier this year that he had surpassed 1,000 pages of the draft, it remains highly probable that audiences will be watching the drama of The Mad King unfold on stage well before the final pages of the next book are ever turned.
