PlayStation Creator Cites Modern Gaming Industry Problem
Ken Kutaragi, one of the key creators of the original PlayStation, believes the gaming industry is experiencing a “major turning point” while facing stagnation in content.
Speaking at a panel at the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo, Kutaragi noted the massive technological progress in games. Modern graphics and project scales significantly surpass anything the creators of the first PlayStation could dream of. In his view, technological development has not had enough of an impact on new ideas and methods of creating games.
Kutaragi believes many modern projects still use creative processes that differ very little from those applied at the start of the PlayStation era. He reminded the audience that the team behind the first console strove to follow existing technology and create solutions capable of setting new directions.

Kutaragi specifically addressed students who might enter the gaming industry. According to him, curiosity and a constant drive for discovery are essential. When a person stops experimenting and decides that “probably, it is already enough,” the space for real change comes to an end.
