Nintendo Patent Details Game-Key Cards Functionality
Nintendo has revealed new details about Game-Key Cards for the Switch 2, showing that the system uses a separate infrastructure and servers from the eShop.
A patent published in Europe and China shows that the eShop and Game-Key Card applications are two different system elements downloaded from separate servers. Because of this, the Game-Key Cards infrastructure can operate independently from the eShop, and the application associated with them can be stored and copied locally.
If a user attempts to download both applications, the Switch 2 will warn them if one of them is already in the console’s memory. This confirms that Nintendo treats both solutions as separate environments.
Earlier tests also showed that a digital game using a Game-Key Card can be transferred wirelessly from one Switch 2 to another even without an internet connection.

The new patent provides a clearer understanding of the format’s design, which Nintendo has made significantly more independent from the eShop than the name “key card” might suggest.
