Gabe Newell Rejected Idea to Add Gore and Dismemberment to Portal

The portal puzzle game could have turned out very brutal.

Saying no can sometimes be very difficult. In a recent video, Valve veteran Chet Faliszek shared how the developers of Portal once found themselves in that exact situation.

Faliszek worked as a writer at Valve from 2004 to 2017 and contributed to Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, and Left 4 Dead. According to him, the classic puzzle game almost received some unusual content when an ambitious developer came up with the idea to add “a lot of gore and dismemberment” to Portal.

Someone with enough boldness wants to fill the entire game of Portal with gore and dismemberment scenes, and it was a terrible idea. The whole team thought it was a terrible idea, but this person was very persistent and called a whole meeting, to which they invited Gabe Newell.

At that point, a colleague asked Chet Faliszek to “just come to this meeting” and then “tell [that developer] no” while pointing out “how stupid this [idea] is.”

Other people, Faliszek explains, did not want to argue with this individual, so the writer joined the discussion and delivered the unpleasant news that Portal would not feature such scenes:

And Gabe is like: Why are we even having a meeting about this? This is the stupidest idea. We shouldn’t be adding gore to the game.

Faliszek also commented on updates for Valve games, noting that the creators themselves are surprised by how players react to them.
