Fourth Wing Author Reveals Four New Characters for Next Book

Threshing Day is the next entry in Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean series. This novella features threshing day stories from 13 characters mentioned in the Fourth Wing books. Despite the book coming out this month, not much was known about it because Rebecca Yarros announced it only a few months before release. Rebecca Yarros decided to satisfy reader curiosity and reveal which characters get a story in Threshing Day.

During their first year at Basgiath War College, rider cadets face threshing, which is the day they must bond with a dragon. If they fail, they either repeat the entire year or die. Coming face-to-face with a dragon causes many cadets to panic, and they do not get another chance. Those who pass gain a companion for life and become riders. Violet bonded with Tairn and Andarna during threshing. Threshing Day shows how the event unfolded for other characters in Fourth Wing.

Until recently, the specific characters appearing in Threshing Day remained unknown. Rebecca Yarros shared quotes from each story on Instagram, challenging fans to guess which dragon spoke each line. She returned to her posts the following day to reveal who the quotes belonged to, slowly unveiling all the characters.

• “Do you give allegiance to the codex while you ride the edge of Malek’s doorstep?” Cath, Dain’s dragon
• “I will not attach myself to another rider who cannot adapt to loss.” Sliseag, Sawyer’s dragon
• “Would you like me to fly over and slice that sexual tension for you?” Glane, Imogen’s dragon

Xaden and Sgaeyl’s threshing day chapter was revealed alongside the book announcement post on Jul. 15. Rebecca Yarros stated that Xaden’s POV will be available on her website for free as usual. This leaves it unclear whether he counts as part of the 13 character stories in the book or functions as a bonus scene like in previous books.

Besides Xaden, Rebecca Yarros confirmed four riders and their respective dragons. The latest quote is: “If I am five, then you are four.” Fans in the comments section believe Aotrom said this to Ridoc since these characters provide comedic relief in the series. Readers will learn more when Threshing Day launches on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026.
