Former Resident Evil Director Proposes “Non-Scary Mode” for Requiem with Cute Zombies and Cherry Blossoms Instead of Blood
Hideki Kamiya has admitted that while he relishes solving puzzles, he has never been a fan of the horror genre.
During an informal discussion regarding Resident Evil Requiem at Clover Studio, industry veteran and former Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya jokingly suggested the implementation of a mode that would allow players to enjoy the gameplay without its terrifying elements. Kamiya noted that while he appreciates the intricate puzzles and combat mechanics, he finds the frightening atmosphere to be entirely optional.
When a colleague pointed out that such a mode might strip the franchise of its fundamental identity, Kamiya responded with his characteristic wit:
This isn’t the first time Kamiya has spoken about his aversion to horror. He recently revisited this idea with the Resident Evil Requiem development team, playfully proposing a “non-scary mode.” In his vision, zombies would be rendered as cute characters, blood spatters would transform into falling cherry blossom petals, and the haunting score would be replaced by an upbeat, cheerful soundtrack. According to the developer, such a setting would allow players to focus on puzzles and combat in a much lighter, more vibrant atmosphere.
