Journalist Introduces Disc-Guy as Sony Looks for New Mascot Following PlayStation Disc Controversy
Following Sony’s plan to stop releasing PlayStation games on disc starting January 2028, journalist Destin Legarie has jokingly pitched a new mascot named Disc-guy to represent physical media.
Sony is looking to boost its brand image after the PlayStation decision and wants to find a new character capable of achieving global recognition on par with Hello Kitty.
Over the years, the company has featured several potential flagship mascots, including Crash Bandicoot. Sony is currently considering Nemu the Night Owl. However, Legarie, who led video production at IGN for nearly 15 years, presented an alternative concept with Disc-guy.
The concept emerged in response to Sony’s move to end physical PlayStation disc releases in January 2028. Legarie suggested that the character could serve as a tribute to physical media formats.
He will make you high revenue, and I will offer him for free. His name is Disc-guy. This mascot celebrates Sony’s rich physical media heritage. He represents values such as game sharing, lending games to friends, and permanent game ownership. (…) You now have a lot of unused discs, so you can use them to produce this mascot. (…) Everyone loves this guy. I think he is a good candidate for Sony’s mascot. This is an early prototype that I am sharing with you for free.
