No Man’s Sky Director Names Game’s True Success Beyond Record Player Count
After a decade of continuous updates for No Man’s Sky, Hello Games head Sean Murray considers his team’s collaborative work far more meaningful than record player numbers or industry trophies.
Murray reflected on the project’s milestones, noting that the highlights of the journey were not BAFTA or The Game Awards honors, but the shared moments of rolling out major expansions together. Key milestones included updates like Voyagers, third-person perspective, and The Space Anomaly social hub. According to Murray, the genuine thrill came when the studio witnessed things “nobody had seen before.”
That was a real buzz. That is when I go home and I am just overflowing with excitement. And you think, “People are going to love this.”

Murray also brought up the Beyond update, which launched with numerous technical issues. In response, the team released approximately 27 hotfixes in a single week.
We just worked really, really hard. (…) The most important thing was that the team worked cohesively and resolved problems very quickly.
According to Murray, this pace of delivery was possible because of the development systems Hello Games built over the years.
