Sydney Sweeney Calls Live-Action Gundam Movie an Action-Romance Space Epic

The live-action Gundam film has been in development since 2018. While high-profile casting announcements have confirmed stars like Sydney Sweeney, specific details about the adaptation of the classic mech anime have stayed under wraps. Now, one of the lead actors has shared a glimpse of what to expect.

Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Noah Centineo described the film as a “big action romance space movie” and called it “a non-Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet in space.” The description points to a story about lovers on opposing sides of a generational war, a concept that aligns closely with traditional Mobile Suit Gundam lore focused on the clash between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon.

Centineo confirmed that the adaptation is set in the Universal Century timeline, which serves as the setting for the original anime and many of the franchise’s key entries. The exact placement on the timeline remains unconfirmed. Concept art released in 2021 featured the original RX-78-2 Gundam suit, though that artwork appeared while Jordan Vogt-Roberts was attached to direct before Jim Mickle took over the helm.

Centineo and Sweeney are joined in the cast by Jason Isaacs of Star Trek: Discovery and Michael Mando of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Filming wrapped at the end of July, but Netflix has not announced a release date. Gundam fans also have other franchise entries on the horizon, such as the upcoming animated series Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO scheduled for 2027 and the video game Gundam Rogue Orbit arriving next year.
