Speaking to GameSpot, Yoshida said he found it surprising both that Naughty Dog wanted to move on from Uncharted and that they were aiming to build something far more mature in tone.
While Uncharted explored adult themes and frequently put protagonist Nathan Drake in the middle of large-scale combat, Yoshida described the series as feeling like “a summer blockbuster movie for a very broad audience.”
Although both franchises include extensive violence, The Last of Us pairs similar brutality with a bleak, suffocating atmosphere that heightens the emotional weight of that violence and results in a markedly more mature narrative. At the time, Yoshida admitted he worried the studio might be narrowing its audience by embracing such a mature direction.
He added that Naughty Dog’s craftsmanship produced an extraordinary game that became an intellectual property even larger in cultural impact than Uncharted, spawning two acclaimed, award-winning games and a successful television adaptation. Yoshida — who is no longer at PlayStation and isn’t involved in current development — said he’s excited that the studio is now working on a new original IP in collaboration with Intergalactic.
