Former Blizzard President Criticized Xbox’s Strategy and Supported Consoles
Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra argues that the console market can still produce strong results when steered the right way.
He also suggested that Microsoft is struggling to define the Xbox brand’s identity. Those remarks came after Sony confirmed that the PS5 generation has been the most profitable period in the company’s history.
The console sector has shown signs of stagnation in recent years. Rising prices and a renewed interest in PC gaming have reduced consoles’ influence. At the same time, Xbox has largely moved away from a traditional strategy to pursue a broader audience. Against this backdrop, Ybarra rejected the idea that consoles are becoming obsolete.
Responding to a tweet about Sony’s sales reaching $136 billion during the PS5 era, he stressed that the console business remains viable with competent management. In a separate reply, Ybarra criticized Microsoft’s “Everything Is An Xbox” mantra, calling the brand’s positioning muddled.
This isn’t the first time the former Blizzard chief has compared PlayStation and Xbox. He frequently voices his views on the console industry and continues to insist that the segment still has a future, despite growing challenges for the major players.
