Final Fantasy XIV Is Coming to Nintendo Switch 2, But There’s a Costly Catch

Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2

Square Enix has officially confirmed that the long-running MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV is arriving on the Nintendo Switch 2 this August. While the prospect of playing Eorzea’s vast adventures on a handheld console is exciting, there is a significant caveat: players will be required to maintain a separate subscription specifically for the Switch version.

This means your existing subscription for PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox will not carry over to the Switch 2 platform. If you wish to enjoy the game across multiple systems, including Nintendo’s new hardware, you will effectively need to manage and pay for multiple concurrent subscriptions, which is bound to be a point of contention for the community.

On a more positive note, the integration will support full cross-progression, allowing you to carry your character data seamlessly between platforms. Furthermore, Square Enix and Nintendo have clarified that a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to access the game, sparing players from a “double-pay” situation regarding online services.

The announcement arrived during the opening ceremony of today’s Final Fantasy XIV: Fan Fest. In addition to the platform news, the studio also unveiled Evercold, the game’s next major expansion, which is currently slated for release in January 2027.
