Many players were underwhelmed by the Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition release.

Many Bethesda fans are uneasy when the studio revisits older titles to issue updates or new editions. More often than not, those updates introduce additional technical issues and cause mods to break.

The November launch of Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition sparked significant backlash — recent Steam reviews are now “mostly negative,” and nearly 4,000 negative reviews have accumulated. Some community members complain that the Anniversary Edition “devours half their FPS”; others report problems launching the game and running mods, including the large Fallout: London project.

The last time Fallout 4 saw this many negative reviews was in 2017 — in September there were 3,829 negative entries (in April 2024 the chart shows a slightly smaller peak of 3,324 negatives, and positive reviews were substantially more numerous).

The surge of negative feedback in April last year followed the “next-gen update” for Fallout 4 — players then also reported broken mods and various technical faults. For instance, some users began to experience frequent crashes.
