Kwalee Labs development team laid off following the launch of Luna Abyss

Despite a warm reception following its May 21 debut, the cosmic horror shooter Luna Abyss has been met with somber news: the entirety of its development team at Kwalee Labs has been disbanded.

In a recent update shared via LinkedIn, CEO Hollie Emery confirmed that the team was made redundant as of Monday, June 16. While specific details remain scarce, Emery noted that the circumstances leading to this difficult decision were “completely outside of our control.” The nine-person studio is now actively pursuing new opportunities within the industry.

“We are deeply touched by the outpouring of support from both the gaming community and the press,” Emery wrote. “While the development journey was fraught with challenges, it has been a career highlight, and we are incredibly proud to have finally brought Luna Abyss to the world.”

Currently playable on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, Luna Abyss tasks players with navigating a desolate, mysterious megastructure buried deep beneath a lunar surface. The gameplay blends high-mobility, first-person shooter mechanics with intense “bullet hell” encounters, requiring quick reflexes as players peel back the layers of the moon’s dark secrets.

The title has garnered an impressive 81 score on Metacritic. Reflecting on the experience, Game Informer’s editor-in-chief Matt Miller noted in a recent assessment that while it shares thematic DNA with other cosmic horror titles, Luna Abyss stands out as a compelling, must-play experience with a distinct identity of its own.
