Electronic Arts has once again stepped in to curb players using the Portal mode, which returned in Battlefield 6 — and the decision has sparked backlash from parts of the community.
The developers added Portal to enable fans to design their own maps and scenarios. The tool proved so user-friendly that people soon began building bot farms and recreating levels familiar to gamers beyond the franchise’s core audience.
Recently the studio restricted the creation of servers used for easy experience-farming, and now fans attempting to recreate maps from other shooters are under scrutiny. Information leaked online that a player who recreated the Call of Duty map “Shipment” received a warning from the publisher, stating that a repeat could result in temporary or permanent loss of access to their EA account, games, and services.
The company stopped at a warning — the creator can still access the game. However, user-map designers will likely have to rename their creations to avoid infringement claims and potential legal disputes between EA and rival shooter publishers.
