BioWare announced on October 21 that the studio has been closed. The developers said work on the next Mass Effect game is ending, so there will be no new installment in the franchise.

In a message to fans on BioWare’s social media account, the team thanked the community for its support:

For more than 30 years, BioWare was more than just a studio. It was a home for the storytellers, developers, and players who breathed life into our worlds. Baldur’s Gate. Neverwinter Nights. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Dragon Age. Mass Effect. Anthem. Now, after more than three decades of adventures together, BioWare is closing, and work on the next Mass Effect is ending at an early stage of development. These words are incredibly hard to write. Right now, all of our attention is on our incredibly talented team, who put their hearts into these games, and on supporting one another through this difficult time. What generations of BioWare employees built together deserves to be recognized and remembered. These games became so much more because of you: you played them, argued over the choices you made, fell in love with the characters, and made these worlds your own. From all of us at BioWare, thank you for being the most meaningful part of our story.

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier said Electronic Arts will cut “approximately 400 jobs.” That is roughly 3% of its total workforce, including about 50 positions at BioWare.
