Borderlands and BioShock Are Being Removed From Steam Libraries After 13 Years, and Players Lose Licenses to Purchased Games
The Polish retailer Muve.pl deactivated old keys, and legitimate buyers who had already activated their games were caught in the cleanup.
In October 2026, players in Poland began complaining on social media that games had been removed from their accounts. They are posting screenshots of system notifications. MateuszGreloch, for example, lost BioShock 2, which he had activated on his account back in 2013:
The Steam product key you activated has been removed from your account. The product activation on your account was voided because of a problem processing the payment for this product. As a result, access to the associated game has also been blocked. This may be related to the payment method you chose when purchasing the product from the seller, or to the way the seller obtained the product key. Contact the key seller for help. Visit the Steam store to buy this game. Otherwise, we recommend deleting the local files associated with it.
Steam users also lost Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and other games in the franchise.
Some players suggested the keys had been bought from questionable sellers on key marketplaces. It quickly emerged that they were purchased from the official store Muve.pl. The store is linked to Cenega, a company that officially distributes games, including titles from publisher 2K.
Muve.pl representatives acknowledged the mistake and blamed a technical failure. They were deactivating old unused keys and accidentally affected keys that had already been activated on Steam accounts. Their system had not marked those keys as “activated.” Muve.pl promised to provide activation keys for these games as compensation to the affected players.
The incident is another reminder of what “owning” digital games on Steam involves. Some players did not know (or forget) that publishers have the right to revoke keys used to activate games.
