Dune Officially Returns Next Week With a New Release

Enthusiasts of the sci-fi epic only have a brief wait remaining before the theatrical debut of Dune: Part Three, the highly anticipated continuation spearheaded by visionary director Denis Villeneuve. Building upon Frank Herbert’s seminal literary universe, Villeneuve first brought the franchise to the silver screen in 2021 with Dune: Part One. This triumph was followed in 2024 by the blockbuster sequel, Dune: Part Two, which shattered expectations by pulling in over half a billion dollars worldwide and cementing the series’ prestige with a remarkable total of eight Academy Awards across its initial chapters.

For fans eager to step back onto the treacherous sands of Arrakis ahead of schedule, Dune: Awakening arrives on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on September 22. Initially launched as an open-world multiplayer survival experience on PC last summer, this upcoming console release introduces a deeply requested standalone single-player journey.

A Tailored Solo Journey Arrives in Dune: Awakening

The upcoming solo mode in Dune: Awakening is remarkably flexible, allowing players to select pre-configured difficulty presets or meticulously fine-tune individual mechanics such as resource gathering, combat intensity, and environmental survival parameters. Developer Funcom has championed the update as “the best version of Dune: Awakening yet.” Although the multiplayer framework has been live for over a year, statistics revealed that a mere 20% of the community actively participated in player-versus-player combat, prompting this significant design pivot.

Narratively speaking, the single-player campaign mirrors the overarching plot of its multiplayer counterpart, while the September 22 rollout also injects fresh story chapters into the mix. Set in the year 10,199 AG—roughly eight years after the timeline of the initial film—the game exists within the same cinematic continuity yet diverges sharply in a pivotal alternate history. While the silver-screen adaptation follows Lady Jessica defying the Bene Gesserit by giving birth to Paul Atreides, Awakening imagines a scenario where she instead bears a daughter, meaning Paul was never brought into existence. (Apologies in advance to Timothée Chalamet enthusiasts.)

Beyond gameplay adjustments, this new solo format grants players the freedom to traverse every hidden corner of the expansive map at a leisurely pace. Taking time to absorb the environment is well worth the effort; Funcom collaborated closely with Greig Fraser, the Academy Award-winning cinematographer behind Villeneuve’s films, utilizing authentic production assets and conceptual artwork to authentically resurrect the iconic desert world.
