DJ Hero 3 Prototype Leaks Online

An early Xbox 360 prototype of DJ Hero 3 has surfaced online years after its cancellation, revealing Activision’s experiments with new music mechanics and motion controls.

With music rhythm games having lost their mainstream appeal, the leak of the scrapped project has drawn significant attention. An anonymous owner preserved the build and contacted Games That Weren’t in July 2026. By August, the copy was handed over to video game preservation group Hidden Palace.

Developer FreeStyleGames began working on DJ Hero 3 shortly after shipping the second installment. The team tested branching mixes along with a dance mode built around Project Natal, the motion tracking accessory later released as Kinect. Developers also tested Wii Remote support.

Activision cancelled the project after deciding to discontinue the Hero brand entirely. The preserved build currently fails to run in the Xenia emulator because of a “Failed to initialize Natal System” error. It does function on actual Xbox 360 development hardware, which allowed researchers to capture the first screenshots and gameplay footage.
