Dispatch Creators Reveal the Simple Secret to Their Resounding Success

The team behind Dispatch explained why the game became one of the season’s biggest hits. Co-director Chris Rebbert attributes the success to a simple formula — a powerful narrative without complicated mechanics.

When we talk about our favorite games, a line often comes up: “I just want a linear story. I don’t want to compete.” I’m not saying competitive titles shouldn’t exist for those who enjoy them, but I believe many players would welcome that same kind of experience [as we did — ed.]. What matters is they launch the game and feel something personal through a linear narrative — without distractions like microtransactions and the like.

All episodes of Dispatch launched on PC and PS5. The creators say the weekly release cadence also played a part — chapters arrived weekly, not all at once or once a month, more like a serialized show.

Interest was stoked by performances from Aaron Paul and Laura Bailey, along with a strong appetite for superhero stories. Within a month the game sold over 2 million copies.
