Anime and video-game adaptations have become major battlegrounds for streamers, and Disney is reinforcing its presence with an anime adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding franchise. Kojima is attached as an executive producer on the project, provisionally titled Death Stranding Isolations, which is slated to stream exclusively on Disney+ in 2027.
Rather than remaking the story of Sam Bridges (Norman Reedus) from 2019’s Death Stranding or directly following the events of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, the series will present an original narrative. The plot centers on a young man and woman who traverse a fractured, post-apocalyptic world after a cataclysmic event linked to the rupture between the living and the realm of the dead.
The production will employ hand-drawn animation from E&H Production, the studio behind Adult Swim’s Ninja Kamui. It marks the directorial debut of Takayuki Sano, whose résumé includes work on Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods and Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
Death Stranding Isolations is only one of several Death Stranding projects in development. Michael Sarnoski — director of A Quiet Place: Day One — is set to write and direct a prequel feature for A24 that explores the origins of the Death Stranding phenomenon. Meanwhile, Aaron Guzikowski (Raised by Wolves, Prisoners) is attached to an original animated film. The first trailer for that project, tentatively titled Death Stranding Mosquito, debuted in September; it will be directed by Hiroshi Miyamoto and produced by ABC ANIMATION STUDIO.
