Fan-favorite locations, enemies, and items will soon arrive in Diablo IV.

Blizzard Entertainment has detailed the upcoming 15th season of Diablo IV, titled Hell’s Legacy.

In this season, players must defeat the echo of Diablo in the catacombs of Tristram Cathedral, the echo of Baal on the peak of Mount Arreat, and the echo of Mephisto in the Prison of Hatred. Completing the seasonal questline yields fragments of their powers known as the three Splinters of Evil.

Depending on the chosen splinter, different powers manifest in combat: Diablo’s power deals fire damage, Baal’s power deals cold damage, and Mephisto’s power deals physical damage. In addition, the splinter imbues the character with vulnerability to its Prime Evil incarnation.

Each splinter features 8 objective modifiers and 6 legendary power upgrades:

  • Diablo’s Splinter of Terror affects Helltides and Infernal Hordes.
  • Baal’s Splinter of Destruction affects the Undercity and boss lairs.
  • Mephisto’s Splinter of Hatred affects the Pit and Nightmare Dungeons.
  • All three splinters affect the Tree of Whispers.

Players can use only one soul splinter at a time, but they can swap them. To select the reputation and rewards of another Prime Evil incarnation, a player must find another splinter in one of the waking nightmares.

Waking nightmares are special events that come in three types. During these events, players encounter old adversaries and visit familiar locations:

  • The greatest waking nightmares are multi-tiered main dungeons that replicate the events of historic battles against the Prime Evil incarnations. Players first discover them during the seasonal questline and can then replay them on Torment difficulty levels in exchange for rewards.
  • Waking nightmares also appear as standard dungeons recreating levels from past games. The developers cited The Den of Evil from Diablo II as an example. These are located in specific spots throughout the open world, just like regular dungeons.
  • The smallest waking nightmares appear randomly in the open world. Entering them transports the player to a chamber to fight a boss from the past or fend off waves of familiar monsters.

The Diablo IV developers will introduce shared war plan progress alongside two Horadric Cube recipes to help modify items by removing unwanted properties while preserving desired ones. In addition, they will introduce nine unique items based on legendary relics of the past, while a new Rebirth system will allow players to turn Eternal characters into Seasonal ones.

The full patch notes and feature breakdown for the 15th season, Hell’s Legacy, are available at the following link. Launch is expected on September 15.
