Diablo 4’s Witcher Crossover Could Literally Only Work for One Class, Says CDPR
During Blizzard Entertainment’s annual BlizzCon celebration, the developer announced an upcoming Diablo 4 cosmetic transformation featuring Geralt of Rivia, alongside a surprising reveal that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will crossover with Overwatch in 2027. While multi-franchise partnerships have become ubiquitous within live-service ecosystems, the specific choice to anchor the Witcher collaboration to the Barbarian class and limit the Cyberpunk integration strictly to Edgerunners sparked immediate intrigue. Speaking with Polygon, key developers from both studios shed light on the creative reasoning behind these choices.
Why the Diablo 4 x The Witcher collaboration features a Barbarian skin
Rather than dropping the White Wolf himself directly into Sanctuary, the partnership introduces a specialized armor set for the Barbarian class. According to CD Projekt Red level design lead Miles Tost, arriving at this decision involved “a lot of back and forth on the creative side, which is challenging, but also part of the fun.”
When asked why the Barbarian was chosen over seemingly viable alternatives like the Rogue or a hypothetical Paladin, Tost pointed to fundamental combat philosophies.
“We landed on something super cool with the Barbarian because we see not just the whole weapons expertise—masters that achieve perfection through massive amounts of training—but also a relatively low level of magic use. Using physical prowess in general as their main weapon, and knowledge,” Tost explained. “I also like to think of the Barbarian’s arsenal system as something that can harken a bit to the need for preparation that a Witcher would need to go through to find the right tool for the right cause.”
Players who pre-order The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s upcoming Songs of the Past expansion through Battle.net will receive the Geralt-themed Diablo 4 cosmetic upon release. With the title slated for a 2027 debut, CD Projekt Red’s official press release indicates that additional crossover content for Diablo 4 is currently in development.
How Edgerunners triumphed over Cyberpunk 2077 for an Overwatch collaboration
Customization items inspired by David from Edgerunners and Talia from Edgerunners 2 are heading straight to Blizzard’s acclaimed hero shooter. Given that the anime series shares thematic DNA with previous Overwatch animated crossovers like One-Punch Man, the decision naturally invites questions about why the core Cyberpunk 2077 game wasn’t prioritized first—especially considering how enthusiastic fans would likely be to step into matches sporting a Johnny Silverhand aesthetic.
Amelia Korzycka, CD Projekt Red’s expert community and social media manager, noted that centering the initial crossover on the anime aligns seamlessly with the impending release of Edgerunners 2, while also directly answering a long-standing wave of community requests.
“We’ve got a lot of feedback overall. Like, when you look at social media, you see a lot of comments: Oh, it would be cool if Overwatch would do a collaboration with Cyberpunk or Edgerunners,” Korzycka remarked. “And Edgerunners, I think, fits a bit better for now. We will see what the future holds, but we want to start with Edgerunners, especially [because] Edgerunners 2 is almost here, right? We have a really cool crew joining Night City’s arsenal of legends and heroes.”
That said, both Korzycka and Blizzard vice president of product Andrew Guerrero hinted that a mainline Cyberpunk 2077 crossover remains entirely possible down the road. “We will see. We want to introduce [Edgerunners] first, and we’ll see what’s happening next,” Korzycka told Polygon, with Guerrero adding, “If players respond in a really positive way, we could always do all kinds of stuff.”
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premieres on Netflix on October 20, with the Overwatch crossover scheduled to launch next year.
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will also come to Battle.net later this year
