Developers of Tactical Game Red Recon 1944 Release Soundtrack and Discuss Composing Its Music

The game’s soundtrack plays a crucial role.

Recently, the composers of Red Recon 1944 (or “Razvedka: 1944”), Daniil Tsovin and Ivan Yarchievsky, explained how they approach scoring the game:

The key distinction is timing. In film, music is tightly locked to the edit and exact seconds — you know when a dramatic beat or a burst of intense action will occur. In a game, except for cutscenes or strictly scripted on-rails moments, you can’t predict a player’s choices. That means the score must be broader and more flexible. We rely on adaptive techniques: when combat begins, a more aggressive, rhythmic theme can kick in. Even within a single encounter it’s difficult to foresee a player’s next move — they might break off and retreat, or they might charge into a decisive assault against superior forces. The music’s job is more about creating the right emotional backdrop than steering the player through fixed narrative beats.

Their greatest challenge when composing for the Great Patriotic War is avoiding kitsch and clichés:

We study a lot of music from that period, but reproducing Soviet-era style note for note would be wrong. So we aim for a balance: references to the past rendered through a modern sonic lens. Soviet cinema is particularly instructive — its musical phrasing often expresses what words cannot. At the same time, we must remember we’re creating a game for the present. The score needs to honor the past while remaining meaningful for today’s players.
