Details Emerge Regarding Sony’s Project Canis Handheld Featuring 14 TFLOPS and PSSR 3.0

According to insider KeplerL2, the upcoming portable PlayStation, Project Canis (PSP 3), will be built on a custom 3-nanometer AMD Canis processor. It will feature six Zen 6 cores—four Zen 6c cores and two energy-efficient Zen 6 LP cores—alongside 24GB of unified LPDDR5X memory with a 192-bit bus. The thermal design power of the device will range from 15 to 25 watts.

Graphics will be handled by a GPU featuring 16 RDNA 5 compute units with Dual-Issue FP32 support. In handheld mode, the clock speed will reach 1.2 GHz, delivering about 4.91 teraflops, while connecting to a docking station will reportedly increase the clock speed to 1.65 GHz and performance to 6.75 teraflops.

However, the main element of the system will be PSSR 3.0. Due to limited power consumption, demanding games will reportedly be rendered at a native resolution of around 540p, after which a neural network algorithm will upscale the image to 1080p. Frame rates are expected to range between 30 and 60 fps, and frame generation should provide an additional boost to visual smoothness.

When connected to a television, the system will reportedly be able to use more aggressive upscaling profiles, reducing the load on the GPU by more than 50 percent. PSSR 3.0 performance will be approximately 10 to 11 teraflops in handheld mode and about 14 teraflops in stationary mode.

For comparison, the base PlayStation 5 features a 10.28-teraflop GPU, while the PS5 Pro reaches 16.7 teraflops.

Insider KeplerL2 also claims that thanks to this architecture, the handheld console will be able to run games locally from the PS4 and PS5 libraries, and eventually titles for the next generation of PlayStation. The device will reportedly significantly outperform the Nintendo Switch 2 in hardware upscaling capabilities.
