Demon Slayer: Infinite Fortress Conquers China, Cementing Its Status as the Highest‑Grossing Anime Ever

Following a triumphant global box-office run, the feature film “Demon Slayer” is now breaking new ground.

The first installment of Demon Slayer’s final trilogy, titled “The Infinite Fortress,” premiered in China and immediately set several records.

In its opening three days the film grossed 373 million yuan (about $52.5 million), including $12.3 million from IMAX screenings. Those receipts represented nearly a quarter of China’s total box office for the weekend and made it the highest-grossing Japanese IMAX release on the Chinese market.

The picture also ranks as the second-highest grossing animated title in IMAX history in the country, behind only “Nezha Conquers the Dragon King.” Since it opened on November 14 and still has four days left in its first week, the final tally is almost certain to rise.

Globally, “Demon Slayer: The Infinite Fortress” has earned roughly $730 million, and the Chinese run will be crucial in its push to cross the $1 billion threshold. Even if it falls short, the film has already claimed numerous milestones.

“The Infinite Fortress” has become the highest-grossing anime of all time and the top-grossing Japanese film in the U.S. market, while also setting several additional records.

Until now the title of highest-grossing anime belonged to the franchise’s previous feature, “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train,” which collected $507 million worldwide. The current lead gives “The Infinite Fortress” a comfortable margin at the top. Still, with two more parts of the trilogy to come, the Demon Slayer franchise likely hasn’t reached its peak yet.
